Michael Kanarek
Mr. Kanarek is an incumbent. I have known him for three years. I met him because he was a BOE member who when I complained, wanted to listen. He is approachable and open to outside opinion. TUF has worked for two years to get the BOE televised. Mr. Kanarek was the first to embrace it. This year there were three new BOE members who also wanted meeting televised. Together they made it happen.
Including the three new board members he has done more to try to work with TUF's plan to have an outside independent review of the BOE budget. He is very intelligent and thinks outside of the box. He often outwardly stands up to BOE bureaucracy and BOE President Eva Nagy.
TUF has never supported a "throw the bums out" approach to voting. It is a "baby with the bath water" mentality. If all of the current BOE members are voted out then we will be left with an inexperienced BOE. Of the remaining five members of the BOE Mr. Kanarek is the most open to change.
I feel Mr. Kanarek's negatives are that he could have pushed harder and faster for televising. He is also often late for BOE meetings and was even a few minutes late for the "Meet the Candidates Night."

- Supports this budget. "It's not perfect but a good compromise." Bemoaned unfunded mandates.
- Wants to increase student test scores by constant monitoring as apposed to periodic testing.
- Want to handle discipline by making the curriculum more interesting, teach teachers how to handle situations, have a "cool down place" for unruly children and have an alternate program for the worst offenders. Pointed out that the state does not allow schools to expel children.
Misses some BOE meetings and is often late.
