The Board of Education (BOE) election, on April 18th 2006 includes a request from the BOE for citizens to approve their budget, approve an additional 1/2 million dollars for an alternative school and the election of three BOE members.

For the first time in several years the incumbent board members will run opposed. The incumbent members are Julio Hernandez, Eddie Webb and BOE vice president Brian Bonanno. The other three candidates will be Nancy LaCorte, Aruna Mettler and former Councilmen Eugene Unger.

TUF is following this election closely.

TUF has decided on its endorsements for candidates, before we name them we'd like to say that all six candidates are qualified because they are all in our opinion intelligent enough and interested enough in the schools and the community to do the job.

We had initially planned to provide questions to all the candidates and request their responses. However, instead we attended and are reporting on the "Meet the Candidates Night" held on April 5th at the Franklin Middle School (the old high school) at 7:30pm. announcement

We have review the BOE budget and have our voting recommendations.

In addition all candidates are be invited to post anything they wish to on our web site in our candidates forum.

Finally we will run a fact check on any campaign literature that becomes available to us. Please send us any literature that you receive so we can critique it.

Correction - 3/6/06 Originally we'd intended to have Mr. Brill join us with fact checking, unfortunately the day after our original posting Mr. Brill indicated that he wound not have sufficient time to devote to fact checking to do it justice. Therefore the following paragraph has been retracted from out original posting. (Gary Brill has offered to help with this. Mr. Brill is a member of Franklin Children First. In recent elections FCF has supported and helped to promote BOE budgets and Referendums. I have found Mr. Brill very fair and open minded. We hope that having his comments alongside Phillip Kramer's or Chip Hoever's will quiet charges of bias.) We will endeavor to find someone fair minded to replace Mr. Brill.
