NJ Recall FAQ

Does a politician have to break a law to be eligible for a recall?

       According to NJ title 19:27A-4a.

No statement of reasons or grounds for the holding of a recall election or for the recall at such an election of an elected official shall be required ..... [It] shall be a political rather than a judicial question.

Essentially recalls are a statement by the voters after watching a political official for one year, "We now know what you are about and we don't like what we see. We'd like to vote again."

The Recall Committee believes recalls should only be used occasional but that their occasionally use can remind politicians they are responsible to the people every day and not just election day. The recall process itself is high enough of a hurdle to prevent frivolous recalls from succeeding.

What is the process?

The recall committee will need to collect signatures from 25% (1512) of voters in the 3rd Ward. Once that is done there will be an election asking if Ritchie should be recalled. Voters will also be able to chose a replacement from a list of candidates. If the majority of voters vote yes then Ritchie is immediately removed from office and is replace by the candidate with the most votes.
