New State Legislation Will Increase Education Costs
According To BOE President Eva Nagy.
Board of Education (BOE) President Eva Nagy has brought an important legislative measure to our attention that could be very expensive for taxpayers. It is a proposal to limit the BOE's ability to subcontract services thus reducing costs.
TUF was alerted to the problem by an email from Ms. Nagy. She also provided us with an
article from the New Jersey School Boards Association here are some quotes:
- A-1714 (Friscia, Sarlo) would prevent school boards from subcontracting custodial, food, transportation and other services during the term of an existing labor contract.
- “With fixed costs rising, property taxes reaching historic highs and state aid essentially frozen at 2001 levels, this would be the worst possible time to take away another tool school boards can use to save money,” said Robert DeSando, NJSBA director of governmental relations.
- The bill was approved in the Assembly on June 13 and is ready to be merged with S-1537 (Charles, Ciesla), an identical bill already released by the Senate Labor Committee.
