A Shining Star Sparkles on The Franklin Township Council
Submitted as a letter to the editor 8/7/2004
For the last eight months we have come to notice a persistent and commendable performance from Brian Regan. From the beginning he caught our attention by bring up important and insightful points about even the simplest issues that came up before the council. Clearly he has spent a great deal of time preparing each meeting. Mr. Regan seemed to listen equally to both sides of discussion and when we voiced our disagreement with him he would seek us out afterwards, not to press his point but to try to understand ours.
He has distinguished himself by the questions he asked when the council was considering controversial issues. The questions of many Councilpersons seem to be more to make a point rather than to gather information. Mr. Regan's questions not only come at the issues from both sides but they often probe to find an innovative alternative that is more amenable to all involved.
What we most respect is that Mr. Regan is not to be afraid to vote with the crowd, against the crowd, with his party or against his party. He will speak out if he feels his fellow Council members are in error. In short he appears to vote for what he believes is best for Franklin. We believe that Mr. Regan does this in the spirit last seen in Councilman Robert Mettler.
We do not wish to detract from the fine contributions of some of the other Council members but Franklin would be well served by a Council that consisted of Brian Regan, Robert Mettler and a coin to flip on the rare occasions when they couldn't find a middle ground. We often do not agree with Mr. Regan's vote but we are confident that he thinks only of Franklin when he casts it. We did not endorse him in the last election, however if Mr. Regan continues in this vein and chooses to runs again then he will likely do so with our support.
